That's how long until Christmas and if you've celebrated with us before, you already know what that number really means. It's not just a date on the calendar. It's the season when "thank you for everything this year" gets said properly. When teams get recognised. When the family finally gets the gift you've been meaning to send since March.

Here's what we've learned in nearly four decades of December: the best gifts are never the ones grabbed in a rush during the last week. They're the ones someone thought about early enough to get right. The right hamper, the right note, the right timing to arrive before the moment, not after it.

When They Say “Anything”…

You ask that good friend, colleague or loved one, “What would you like for your birthday?”

And they reply:

“Anything.”

Suddenly, instead of making things easier, they’ve made it even harder. 

Because what exactly is anything?

Before you start overthinking it, here are a few simple ways to figure out what they may actually appreciate.

1. Think about something they recently said they need.
   People casually mention things all the time “I really need a new…”, “Mine is getting old”, “I’ve been meaning to buy…” Pay attention to those little comments. They can be some of your best gift clues.
2. Remember what they’ve been admiring.
   Have they pointed something out in a store? Sent you a picture? Talked about something they’ve wanted for weeks? Sometimes the perfect gift has already been mentioned, you just need to remember.
3. Look at what they already enjoy.
   Think about their style, hobbies, favourite colours, interests or the things they use often. You don’t always need to introduce them to something completely new. Sometimes, giving them a better version of something they already love works perfectly.
4. Think about their current season.
   Did they just start a new job? Move into a new apartment? Begin travelling more? Pick up a new hobby? What is happening in their life right now can point you towards something useful and thoughtful.
5. When in doubt, make it personal.
   If you still can’t decide, choose something simple and add a personal touch, a thoughtful note, their initials, beautiful packaging or something connected to an inside joke or shared memory.

So the next time someone tells you “anything,” don’t panic.

They may not have given you an answer, but chances are, they’ve been giving you clues all along.
